Willem J. Kolff, M.D., PhD

 
Recognized as the inventor of the artificial kidney, Dr. Kolff (b.1912) worked to improve this machine as well as to experiment with artificial hearts, assist devices for the heart, and other mechanical devices. The Willem J. Kolff Collection, acquired by The Smithsonian Institution in 1998, contains approximately 500 objects, and reflects Dr. Kolff's work on artificial internal organs during his career in Holland, at the Cleveland Clinic, and at the University of Utah.
   
 
 
George E. Schreiner, M.D.
 

Dr. George E. Schreiner (b.1922) developed the protocol for dialyzable drugs and the use of the artificial kidney machine for drug overdose cases during the 1950s at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. He was a founding member of several nephrology societies, including the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) in which he served as Journal Editor 1958-86, Secretary/ Treasurer 1956-58, and President 1959-60.
