Item Newspaper Column: A Critical Election(The Connection, 2000-03) Nicoson, William J.Next Saturday Reston residents will receive in the mail a critical envelope from the Reston Association. It will contain a ballot for the election of three members of RA’s board of directors. The ballot must be marked and returned by 5 p.m. on March 31. Why is this envelope so “critical”? Because, over the 3-year term of the directors to be elected, RA faces long-term decisions affecting the property values and life-style of all residents.Item Newspaper Column: Reston Governance by Referendum?(Reston Times, 2001-03) Nicoson, William J.The election stump-shouting is over. The campaign squads at grocery stores are gone. Candidates’ flyers are relegated to history’s ashcan. Reston Association’s counting agent closed down receipt of ballots by post and internet last Friday. Three of the six candidates will be installed as directors of RA next Tuesday. Will it matter which three? Yes, but not on one burning issue. All the candidates supported calling a referendum of RA’s members to vote on winterizing and renovating the existing structure at the Nature Center to permit educational programs throughout the year. Projected costs will run to some $636,000 to be raised by a nonprofit affiliate, Friends of Reston for Community Projects, which kicked off its fundraising campaign last Wednesday.Item Newspaper Column: Simon and Forst for the RA Board(The Connection, 1999-03) Nicoson, William J.You’ve just sent your $370 annual assessment check to Reston Association. Next week you’ll receive your ballot for election of RA directors. Since you value RA as the steward of property values and life-style in the community, you’ll carefully consider the candidates, mark the ballot and mail it. You figure that’s the least you can do to support your own personal interest in the quality of your community. Who are you? Well, if history is any guide to RA voting this year, all of you will comprise less than 20% of RA’s members.Item Newspaper Column: Stalemate at Reston Association?(The Connection, 2000-04) Nicoson, William J.The results of last month’s election of directors for three seats on the Reston Association board may move RA closer to stalemate on a range of critical issues due for resolution this year. Before the election, the voting record of 6 board members generally supported principles of the Alliance for a Better Community (ABC), favoring initiatives designed to improve the quality and accessibility of RA assets (such as winterizing the Nature House, closing missing pathway links and protecting streams and lakes from erosion). The record of 2 others, Vera Hannigan and Glen Downing, supported the “V” principle (“V” for Vera Victorious), opposing anything that costs money, even when RA members aren’t paying. One director, Donn Dears, has been a swing vote.
