Abstract

This is a novel about a mother and daughter who are each reconciling their dark pasts. When Marina’s sister, Gigi, arrives at Marina’s home for a surprise visit, Marina is confronted with the idea that their late, abusive father was not really their biological father. Marina and Gigi read diary entries written by their mother, Suey Long Lee, who immigrated to the U.S. from China in 1942 and who now suffers from Dementia, to try and find answers about their family. Meanwhile, Marina’s daughter Melody is followed by a ghost after she experiences sexual trauma. After a period of the ghost’s absence, Melody arrives at college and immerses herself in a group of drug-dealing friends, and begins to sense a supernatural presence once more.
