Abstract

This thesis provides the first fourth of a novel which follows two brothers as they travel through France and into Switzerland—one on his way to die by way of physician-assisted suicide and the other attempting to convince the other out of it. Jake, the older brother, has faced cancer twice before and it has come back a third time in the form of an inoperable brain tumor. He wishes not to waste away under the treatment of his illness, and thus requests a death date from a Swiss organization named Exit Journey, which upon awarding their assistant, makes their own request—that Jake journey with a companion for the end. Unable to put his young daughter or mother through the ordeal, Jake enlists the help of his younger brother Brian, who has recently left a career in politics to attend seminary school. Brian agrees to go with Jake, as long as the two brothers visit French churches and pilgrimage sites along the way, Brian believing that he still has time to convince his brother to turn to God rather than lethal injection.
