This novel follows a small family of women at the outskirts of a town in Oregon. After their father, a big game hunter, goes missing in the Congo, sisters Isolde and Jules must keep their family afloat through any means necessary. Elder sister Jules, a nurse, takes drastic and violent measures to isolate the family, while younger sister Isolde begins to follow uncomfortably close in their father’s footsteps. Jules’ daughter, Mercy, gets involved in the occult, hoping that the supernatural will bring him home. Gradually, the trio realize that the absence of their father-figure is not the issue – there is a darker, more sinister problem at home.
