Rather than invite more theoretical statements about the possibilities of online publishing, they wanted to see what electronic publication might mean concretely for American studies scholarship. They also wanted to offer some of the conventional validation and peer review that scholarly publication in a journal generally offers. They solicited proposals and approved four projects, which then went through a peer review and revision process before being made available to the public through this website. In addition, the June 1999 issue of American Quarterly included comments on the experiment from the authors and from other scholars.en-USDigital historyHypertext Scholarship in American StudiesProject
