1. Which individual or event do you attribute the greatest historical significance in the advancement of organ replacement devices or machines? Please explain why.

Dr Willem Kolff -- Why? Not only starting the field, but the circumstances under which he developed it. That is more than 60% of the story! He started in Kampen, The Netherlands during German occupation in World War II where he dialysed many patients, reaching his first success with the 17th patient.
