1. Which individual or event do you attribute the greatest historical significance in the advancement of organ replacement devices or machines? Please explain why.
  The important thing is that the major developments in artificial organs -- for example, dialysis, pacemakers, pump oxygenators -- were NOT the work of one individual nor a single event but rather the culmination or synthesis of work done by many over time.
