George Mason University has been expanding for over fifty Years. From its humble beginnings in an eight-room elementary school in Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia, with an enrollment of seventeen students, to its three campuses with nearly forty thousand students and staff decades later, Mason has demonstrated enormous growth quickly.

The documents in this collection come from both physical and born-digital collections of the George Mason University Facilities Planning Department, many of which are held in the Special Collections Research Center.

    George Mason College of the University of Virginia, Master Plan Preliminary Report, January 1968

    After the Virginia General Assembly's designation of George Mason College as a four-year degree-granting institution in March 1, 1966, a number of key studies were done by and on behalf of George Mason. Each implied greater expansion of and eventual independence from the University of Virginia for George Mason College. One of them, the George Mason College of the University of Virginia Master Plan, detailed the infrastructure needed to accommodate a major university, while anticipating a student body of 15,000 in 1985. This document is the Preliminary Report, completed in January 1968 by John Carl Warneke and Associates of Washington, D.C. The final version was published in August of that year. This document contains: a Preface comprised of Intention and Scope, History of Development, and Summary of Recommendations; Regional Analysis of location, land use, and transportation; Site Analysis of the land; Space and Facilities Requirements; Master Plan Proposals for "concept", land use, and "massing and circulation", traffic, and phasing and development; Site Engineering (grading, drainage, and roads); Mechanical System Requirements (water, sewer, and other utilities); Financing; and Possible College Growth.     Approved by the George Mason University Board of Visitors on November 15, 1978, this master plan revised the 1968 plan, which was created when George Mason was then George Mason College of the University of Virginia. It was prepared to reflect an institution that was whose mission had , in its own opinion, changed dramatically.     In June 1959 The University of Virginia hired the architectural firm Joseph Saunders & Associates of Alexandria to produce a plan for the construction of George Mason College. The firm’s August 1960 report presents the entire concept of the new college to be built at Fairfax. Included in the report are: the Program, which outlines the stages of construction (both initial and future); the Design Analysis, which details the site development (use of land, grading, and landscaping); building design (architecture, aesthetics, and construction); and mechanical design (heating, cooling, and plumbing); recommendations, and specifications.
