Happy New Year 2019! The Libraries had a great year in 2018, highlights of which we are pleased to share with you in the following pages. Mason’s second annual Giving Day was a huge success for the Libraries—with the generous contributions of many we were able to fully fund the Student Assistant Scholarship Endowment for the Libraries and offer our first two scholarship awards to two deserving library student assistants.

2017 was quite a year. We dedicated our first named space in our Arlington Campus Library – the John N. Paden Nigerian/African Collection. We completed renovations on the second floor of the old Fenwick building, bringing our music collection together in a Music Library and launching our Digital Scholarship Center. And, with a Special Project Grant from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, we looked back at the Cuban Missile Crisis and expanded our Oral History Project archives.

The Mason IDEA (innovative, diverse, entrepreneurial, accessible), the core institutional characteristics of George Mason University, speaks to Mason’s central purpose and its aspiration of “being the best university for the world.” In pondering what this means—particularly for the university’s library system—we immediately recognize that accessibility, innovation, diversity (of ideas and people), and, yes, entrepreneurship itself are core characteristics of our professional practice and ethos at Mason...

The past year, 2012, was an exciting time for Mason. The university celebrated its 40th anniversary as an independent institution, and the Fenwick Library celebrated its 45th anniversary as the first, and now, central library of the Mason library system. Notably, also in mid-year, Dr. Ángel Cabrera became Mason’s sixth president.
